The takeaway is that artificial general intelligence has an interesting future but it is not immediate. Whether an entire generation of software developers are on the wrong path, is uncertain, but clearly, deeply understanding language and especially understanding context has a long ways to go for existing machines. Maybe just as well, because humans are not even adjusting to statistical AI’s predictive capabilities.

In this conversation, which is a precursor to an upcoming deep dive into risk and resilience in the next decade, they talk about what risk management is all about, how executives can handle disasters, and map out some of the needed vocabulary to start understanding risk in a systemic way.

The takeaway is that in order to fully prepare for the next decade, there is really no way around developing a systematic take on risk and resilience. There is so much to know but a first step is to be aware of the organizations and frameworks that exist to help executives map their risk and start developing approaches that might work no matter what happens to their organizational assets in a crisis.

How To Write a Book on the Future of Healthcare

Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Scott E. Burgess, Founder of Healthcare360 Media Group and host of the Healthcare360 podcast.

We talked about the importance of having a deep conviction before you write a book, how you go about creating a piece of true thought leadership, and, more specifically, what’s wrong with healthcare today. In the process, Scott starts sketching the solution he envisions, rebuilding healthcare from scratch and where YOU need to become your own best healthcare advisor.

My takeaway is that there is no substitute for integrity. I more deeply understand the rogue thinking required to turn healthcare around and I would look to Scott to provide a key perspective in the coming year. The system of the future will be, or rather needs to be, built around the individual, not the insurance or even the medical providers. What that means goes far beyond the current industry buzzword of value based care.

As for how to write books, I summarized it into four key decisions surrounding: flow, brand, Quality, and speed. I believe if you know your approach to these four issues, everything else follows.

Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Tom Moebus, Founder of TenXGrow, whose mission is to help small companies grow in dramatic ways. We talk about our mutual background at MIT’s Industrial Liaison Program, why Tom has comes out of retirement for COVID-19, which, echoing Buddhist thinking is a “noble moment”. He tells us how he helps Main Street businesses pivot and learn to operate under new conditions, and learn from each other. We discuss his project to connect young people in America and China to create wise people who will learn to collaborate before their minds are colored with what society tries to feed them. Finally, we learn how the protest generation of the 60s might be rising again and what they are concerned with now.

The takeaway is that the second half of life is becoming a more and more central part of people’s lives. We are healthier longer and have energy to give. The activism of the 60+ generation is different because they are more mature, more balanced, and, perhaps at times, wiser. Some of this activity stems from Men’s groups, where all kinds of experiences are discussed and where people are mobilized to act. They ask: what is the end contribution I want to have made to the world? I’m reminded that this is a question we can ask at any age.

Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews special guests Alison Maitland and Rebekah Steele, authors of INdivisible: Radically rethinking inclusion for sustainable business results.

We talk about why both inclusion and diversity, separately and together matter to the bottom line. We discuss the sensitive aspects of white male earned privilege and how many of us experience a combination of privileges and disadvantages that can link us all on a common journey. We discuss why they are soaring now compared to a decade ago, what approaches deliver results that matter, what the metrics are and where we go from here.

The takeaway is that unless diversity is understood widely—as a competitive asset—those organizations that are lucky enough to have it are likely not monetizing it. As for inclusion, it’s important far beyond the fairness aspect, it turns out all of us have aspects that may lead us to be excluded from something unless society explicitly mandates being inclusive. Again, the benefits are tangible and important. As for where we go from here: it is both an individual and a collective responsibility, but the issues are squarely on the agenda, now we just need smart ways to make progress.

In this conversation, they talk about how augmented reality builds on insights that were present among the precursors of the internet, such as Douglas Engelbart and Alan Kay. They explore whether and how AR can evolve into a communication platform that is in some ways more real than co-presence, or at least can support simultaneous digital collaboration in a way we have never seen before. How long might this take? What will the form factor be? Will computers as we know them become outdated within the next decade?

The takeaway is that AR has the potential to shift digital communication into a radically novel, transformative collaboration environment where simulation, multi-sensory stimulation and symbiosis between humans and computers can unlock innovative potential and provide the backbone of a platform that can help humanity confront its greatest challenges, such as climate change, pandemics, and other threats to our way of life, and ultimately to our existence. With the pandemic, we now have an incentive to build this out a decade earlier than it it would otherwise have happened. To ensure that AR does not become a “walled garden” but can benefit all consumers and all enterprises, we need open architectures to flourish.

Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interiews Babi Mitra, founding Executive Director of the New Engineering Education Transformation (NEET) initiative at MIT.

They talk about the urgent need to update the way we educate our engineers which is an effort happening at engineering schools worldwide, including at the top schools. The stakes on re-imagining education just got higher because of COVID-19. Is there really a need to rebuild engineering education from scratch? Which schools are at the forefront of the experimentation? What will education look like in the next decade? At MIT, the theme is still machines, but the emphasis is on building new types, advanced materials machines, living machines, renewable energy machines, and more.

My takeaway is that by re-imagining education, we correct for the highly theoretical way that engineering was taught over the past three decades. The thought was that there needed to be scientific rigor but the result was that the education ceased to be enjoyable.

Now, the realization is that exploration, discovery, and this somewhat nebulous idea of meta-cognition can all be fostered by a set of tweaks that put the students in charge of their own learning and liberate them to build things from the get-go, bring it back to real life challenges. When you add spades of positive reinforcement and blend in thoughtful, project based learning and external speakers that fit the educational context, you can inspire students even more than their professors can do alone.

Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Vassilia Orfanou, founder of Luxembourg Diplomacy and Communications Institute, Ludci.eu, the media diplomacy agency.

We talked about child trafficking, the first problem Ludci.eu will devote its attention to. Child trafficking is a global crisis where the fragmentation of actors hampers media’s ability to cover the stories and make progress in the field. Emerging technology is a double edged sword which enables crime syndicates but it also represents opportunities for monitoring and tracking and agenda setting.

The takeaway is that there is no need for additional organizations working on the content surrounding child trafficking. Rather, the problem is to coordinate and make current activity more visible and efficient. Putting all the information in one place and joining up the actors who work in the field in one communication effort seems to be a viable path. Child trafficking is a horrendous issue, but seems to be such a profitable endeavor currently with so attractive economics for those who pursue it that it needs to be pursued from a variety of angles, from law enforcement to legislative proposals to awareness initiative. Big brands have a big responsibility in this effort and sharing best practices could be fruitful. The next decade could be pivotal and we just might be able to turn the tide.

Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Alec Shkolnik, President and co-founder of Liquid Piston, an MIT spinout. We talk about engines and how they can power robots, vehicles and drones. Our guest has made the bold choice of making a new engine, which hasn’t been attempted since 1954, instead of just capitalizing on his gold plated education in AI, robotics and neuroscience in the most obvious way.

 

The takeaway is that even though engines powered by anything but electricity seem a bit outdated in today’s environment, the future is a hybrid scenario with a mix of engines with different capabilities contributing to optimizing our desired mobility. By giving the rotary engine an overhaul, Liquid Piston might take us even faster into a future where a myriad of machines let us venture farther, faster and with more flexibility than today’s technologies allow. What an exciting prospect that, in this age of big conglomerates in the automotive sector, a father/son business might one day power the vehicles you see all around you.

The takeaway is that digital health has come quite far, but that its breakaway promises have only just begun to manifest themselves. This year, investment in the field has spiked, even before COVID-19, which indicates we will move at a rapid pace in the next few years. One exciting field is prescription digital therapeutics. However, big challenges remain. Progress in healthcare doesn’t come easy, even with digital tools at our disposal. We are dealing with legacy infrastructures, mindsets, government regulation and intractable problems coming from left field, such as pandemics and the complexities inherent in any public health intervention.

The takeaway is that the coronavirus pandemic is so much more than a public health crisis. It will arguably change society. Right now, we are not sure exactly how. We talk about jazz improv, geopolitics, technology, privacy, openness, human dignity, data trusts, quantum computing as well as post-pandemic tech opportunities and constraints.

 

The takeaway is that the world now needs to ensure that new technologies not only contribute to innovation but also simultaneously empower people, increase prosperity and secure peace. One way we talked about is to develop data trusts to secure that exchanges of data are mutually beneficial and provide ethical and governance support.

Futurist and author Trond Arne Undheim reviews the RSA Asia Pacific & Japan 2020 Virtual Event, arguably the world's leading cybersecurity event, this time only available as a virtual event. 

 

My takeaway is that taking part in a virtual event during COVID-19 is necessary and interesting but it is not how we are going to spend the next decade. The virtual interface is okay, but not great. It lacks a lot of the contextual cues that you find in live events or indeed even in websites. There is enormous scope for improvement, to make it more seamless.
