Financial Megatrends in the Middle East
Monday Nov 16, 2020
Monday Nov 16, 2020
Biswajit Dasgupta, Chief Investment Officer - Head of Global Markets at Emirates Investment Bank, interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim.
In this conversation, they talk about financial and social Megatrends, COVID-19’s impact on the region and the world, geopolitical risk, economic challenges at the start of the decade in the MENA region and beyond, and what that means for the future.
My takeaway is that the future of the Middle East is crucial to the future of everything else. It’s increasingly a gateway region between Europe, Asia, and America. A region fraught with risk, it seems to emerge with a mixed picture—both highly developed and somewhat vulnerable if the post-petroleum transition does not go well. The COVID-adaptions similarly show a mixed picture. A region to watch and engage with.

The Future of Corporate Venturing
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
James Mawson, CEO and founder of Mawsonia, the publishing company producing Global Corporate Venturing, interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim.
In this conversation, we talk about the current state and the future of corporate venturing, the activity of big corporations who invest in startups in various ways, during and post-COVID-19.
My takeaway is that corporate venturing has emerged as a more and more reliable and impactful asset class, born out of a desire to catch up on innovation but maturing into a significant, positive force for sustainable, high impact innovation, growing through shocks in the economy.

The Future of AI in Government
Tuesday Nov 10, 2020
Tuesday Nov 10, 2020
Lord Clement-Jones, consultant of global law firm DLA Piper, former chair of the UK House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim.
In this conversation, we talk about emerging regulations for substituting AI for human labor and routine work, regulating big tech, AI for grand societal challenges, data trusts, and UK strengths in AI.
My takeaway is that there are crucial risks and opportunities involved with AI that do need to be resolved this decade, by governments, even though the pace of adoption might not be as steep as some industry visionaries predict. The existing governance frameworks around the world are not enough. He government simply needs a new approach to algorithmic decision making. Data trusts is one piece of the puzzle, not the only approach, but perhaps an important one.

The Future of Royalty
Monday Nov 09, 2020
Monday Nov 09, 2020
H.R.H. Prince Michel de Yougoslavie, interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim.
In this conversation, they talk about growing up as a Pan-European royal. We cover his deep interest in art and success with exhibiting his photography. We also touch on trends in family wealth considerations, we discuss his time as a high end real estate broker in Palm Beach, Florida, and he shares his life experience as a royal and the lessons that apply for anybody with a family legacy. At the end we briefly discuss the future role of royalty.
The takeaway is that the future of royalty is going to be interesting to watch. In this day and age of constant frenzy, the timeless aspects of royalty, even as history wrecks kingdoms, provides a context by which to view ourselves in a perspective that values legacy and experience across generations. I’m reminded that, regardless of wealth or stature, families tend to outlast individual destinies.

How to Invest in Sci-Fi Tech?
Thursday Nov 05, 2020
Thursday Nov 05, 2020
Adam Draper, Managing Director and co-founder of Boost, the startup accelerator and VC firm, is interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim.
In this conversation, they talk about taking your investment advice from sci-fi movies. Exoskeletons, jet packs, iron man suits, time travel, deep ocean exploration. Which specific sci-fi technologies are coming online in the next decade and which have already?
The takeaway is that Sci-fi Tech is here already, and is shaping our world in thought provoking ways. In fact, we no longer need to watch Westworld, Alien, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Back to The Future, The Matrix, Ex-Machina, or even Ready Player One, in order to experience a sci-fi moment, suffice to glance at your smart phone, look inside a contemporary factory, or talk to a deep tech startup founder over coffee. The world of our dreams —and fears—is rapidly coming to life in this decade alone.

Parliamentary Tech and Hypertransparency
Tuesday Nov 03, 2020
Tuesday Nov 03, 2020
Fotis Fitsilis, Head of the Scientific Service, Hellenic Parliament, interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim.
In this conversation, we talked about how parliamentary transparency, steeped in legal informatics, innovation in govtech, open data and ongoing digitization, is slowly inching forward because of innovative initiatives such as the Hellenic OCR Team. OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. Emerging use cases include access, archiving, analysis, transparency and traceability of the enormous amount of information passing through any national parliament. The market for such application is muc vaster that the 190 or so national parliaments. Virtually any legislative body at any level might be a target, and there might be tens of thousands such governance structures, not counting non-governmental bodies that also have a highly structured governance.
My takeaway is that government hypertransparency is still a decade or so away, but the Hellenic Parliament is leading the way, together with the US, UK and Canadian parliaments, as well as a set of countries in Northern Europe. Parliamentary documents are highly specialized texts and making them meaningful for machine analysis is not easy. However, precisely because they are so information rich, the promise of linguistic, political, historical and industrial analysis is great. Hyper transparency is definitely within sight, if not yet within reach.

The Future of the High Net Worth Lifestyle
Thursday Oct 29, 2020
Thursday Oct 29, 2020
Dalton Skach, CEO of Gold Gate, a fintech focused on real estate is interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim.
In this conversation, they talk about how to own homes in Beverly Hills, Dubai, Tokyo, Singapore and London for the price of one through fractional real estate investing. The approach builds in tokenization. We discuss the needs of the wealthy post-COVID-19.
The takeaway is that the future of High Net Worth Lifestyle is changing rapidly with COVID as well as new blockchain based opportunities to invest with a fractionalized approach, even in the traditional asset class of real estate. Could this re-invigorate the asset class? Will commercial real estate tank first? Many questions linger.

The Future of Open Finance
Tuesday Oct 27, 2020
Tuesday Oct 27, 2020
Amrit Kumar, President and co-founder of Zilliqa, the blockchain platform, is interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim, host of the Futurized podcast and author of Future Tech (2021), Pandemic Aftermath (2020), Disruption Games (2020) and Leadership From Below (2008).
In this conversation, they talk about bridging the worlds of legacy finance and blockchain, scaling blockchain protocols with sharing, security trade-offs, holding community and operational funds by staking, emerging startups, and divergent regulatory paths around the world.
The takeaway is that the future of open finance is rapidly evolving, but that trust will ebb and flow for a while ahead as decentralized and open finance is spreading across the globe with new players building protocols with increasingly smart contracts, speedy platform solutions, and alternative tokens that provide new benefits that appeal to new groups of users and investors.

The Future of Brands in Politics
Friday Oct 23, 2020
Friday Oct 23, 2020
Victoria Sakal, Managing Director of Brand Intelligence at Morning Consult, interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim, host of Futurized podcast and author of Future Tech, Pandemic Aftermath, Disruption Games and Leadership From Below.
In this conversation, they talk about how big brands should deal with the US election, political intelligence, emerging survey results on how consumers think brands should react to social movements. Do consumers expect CEOs to take a stance on emerging issues such as climate change, #MeToo, safe elections, or COVID-19? Who do consumers trust the most, politicians or brands? What are the top issues on Americans’ minds? How will the political role of brands evolve?
The takeaway is that, at least based on the survey findings we discussed today, brands have no choice but to enter the policy debate on important societal issues. That does not mean that they can or should necessarily take sweeping views on all issues at hand. Consumers don’t —yet—expect brands to behave as responsibly as governments. But that may change. For now, the advice for brands would be to take a stand on issues that are close to heart and where you have integrity. Then, you need to follow up. Post-election, brands will likely find themselves in a renewed game of stakeholder capitalism. Gone are the days where shareholders were all that mattered.

The Future of Cryptocurrency
Thursday Oct 22, 2020
Thursday Oct 22, 2020
Ryan Selkis, founder and CEO of Messari, the crypto economy analyst firm, interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim, host of Futurized podcast and author of Future Tech, Pandemic Aftermath, Disruption Games and Leadership From Below.
In this conversation, they talk about what cryptocurrency is in simple terms, what's next in terms of adoption, and where we are going in the next decade.
The takeaway is that the future of cryptocurrency is of such transformational character that the global economy is likely to change forever as a result. The only question is the speed of adoption and the important regional differences in terms of speed of adoption, governance models and new, emerging powerhouses. If Ryan Selkis is right, Bitcoin will take on aspects that make it similar in function to the gold standard. These are earth shattering predictions indeed. Combine that, with the fact that volatility will continue to be high for some time to come. How to prepare for a period where stability includes volatility? If this comes to pass, entire economic paradigms will get smothered.

Evolving Startup Ecosystems
Tuesday Oct 20, 2020
Tuesday Oct 20, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Christian Nagel, Founder of Venture Lane, business angel and expert on go-to-market strategies, communication and international rollout.
In this conversation, they talk about tribal community building, networking, funding, scaling startups mid- and post-COVID-19. They cover startup hubs, what it takes to achieve critical mass, innovating in edge cities, the EU vs. US vs. Asia, learning from failure, angel investing, mentoring and the tech community in Boston.
The takeaway is that you cannot get around the human factor in community building. Protecting the positive aspects of tribalism whilst still achieving scale is key to all startup ecosystems, particularly as COVID-19 limits traditional informal meetups.

The Future of Flux
Thursday Oct 15, 2020
Thursday Oct 15, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Sid Mohasseb, author, investor, professor, and known as the entrepreneur philosopher.
In this conversation, they talk about The Future of Flux. Entrepreneurial philosophy. Personalizing your journey. Listening to the Guru near you. Evolve like a caterpillar--again and again.
The takeaway is that the deepest motivation behind entrepreneurship is to seek happiness. We can only learn if we are open to them possibility of learning everywhere around us. Anybody or anything could be the source of the final spark that leads to lasting insight. But we have to stay alert and we need to be ready for the reality of change, whether it be rapid or slow. The Future of Online Learning
Tuesday Oct 13, 2020
Tuesday Oct 13, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Furqan Nazeeri, Partner at Extension Engine, the online education platform consulting firm.
In this conversation, they talk about what learning is all about, how COVID-19 both (in)validates and facilitates online learning. They discuss online learning platforms, the best approaches at the moment, and where we are headed in the next decade.
The takeaway is that online learning as it was practiced for 20 years was invalidated by COVID-19 and we don’t yet have the answer to what it must become. Having said that, the best universities are doing something right.
After listening to the episode, check out Extension Engine as well as Furqan Nazeeri's online profile:

Global Innovation Index
Monday Oct 12, 2020
Monday Oct 12, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Professor Soumitra Dutta, Cornell University, co-author of Global Innovation Index, published by the World Intellectual Property Foundation.
In this conversation, they talk about measuring innovation, the challenges of developing governance at the country level, across the globe, and how to improve innovation input and output.
The takeaway is that the future of innovation measurement will continue to evolve with the metrics that become available, but could also deteriorate if we are not careful to maintain statistical data and overview through national and international monitoring. In 2020’s Index, Switzerland comes out in top with China, Vietnam and the United Republic of Tanzania topping their comparable income groups. Behavioral Science in Product Design
Thursday Oct 08, 2020
Thursday Oct 08, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Matt Wallaert, behavioral scientist and author of Start At The End: How To Build Products that Create Change.
In this conversation, they talk about how the field of product design has evolved, the value of experimentation, discovery of cutting edge products, who does it well, corporations and startups, and how the future of product design is steeped in science.
The takeaway is that behavioral science should be an obligatory part of product design and it cannot be an afterthought. Right now, most companies are overweight on data scientists and underweight on behavioral scientists, even though they are both needed in equal measure for a product to succeed.

The Future of Cultured Meat
Tuesday Oct 06, 2020
Tuesday Oct 06, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews David Brandes, Managing Director and co-founder of Peace of Meat.
In this conversation, they talk about the technology of cell-based, cultured meat, the sustainability benefits of removing animals from food production, consumer trust, regulatory forces, disruption, and the future of food tech.
The takeaway is that cultured meat is here to stay, although it’s introduction will take time and will vary depending on tech innovation speed, regulatory attitudes and consumer trust. COVID-19 has brought about a renewed discussion about food safety and worker safety—lab grown meat does not seem as far fetched as it once did.

One Woman’s Empowerment Quest to help One Million
Thursday Oct 01, 2020
Thursday Oct 01, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Savi Barrowes, host of the Dream Big and Live Free podcast.
In this conversation, which I initially had planned as a prep call, we instead dove straight in. We talked about Savi’s path to empowerment, her quest to empower one million women, her project on the future of work for American nurses which brought her to the White House, what she took away from her MBA at MIT Sloan, the meaning of life, whether we need a North Star and how to turn adversity in to personal and professional growth. In doing so, we also talk about what the next decade will bring for women’s empowerment.
My takeaway is that even if your life is defined by abrupt shock, such as suicide in the family before you turn 19, domestic abuse, a divorce before you are thirty, and starting out without formal education, you can still prevail. Not only that, you can experience outsized success, and even better, you can inspire others to make changes to transform their lives. What a powerful message to young women and to all of us.

The Future of Computational Media
Tuesday Sep 29, 2020
Tuesday Sep 29, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Chris Weaver, Distinguished Professor of Computational Media at Wesleyan University, Director of Smithsonian Videogame Pioneers Initiative and Research Scientist at MIT microphotonics center. Chris was busy this week also because the video game holding company he founded, ZeniMax Media (owner of major franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, DOOM, RAGE, Wolfenstein, Prey, Dishonored, The Evil Within, and QUAKE), was acquired by Microsoft, reportedly for $7.5 billion.
In this conversation, which was initially planned as a prep call, which gives the episode a bit of a behind-the-scenes characteristic, with prep questions and the whole thing, they instead end up going deep, for 1h 19 minutes. They talk about Chris’s early opportunity to shape the futuristic thinking at ABC, the Television network, his pioneering role as a video game company founder, as well as his new role capturing the important recent history of video games. As you will discover, they are a key to understanding both the 20th and the 21st century. Finally, they talk about how and why to teach our kids about computational media and the great challenge of making the complexity of the scientific system communicate with the binary political system that always look for simple answers.
The takeaway is that the complexity of computational media is still poorly understood in society. However, when it is, and it will be, great change can happen. Video games, for example, provide the potential for much more fundamental experiences than most of us think about. The lessons from the tech development, sensory exploration and the metacognition that ensues, are already influencing several generations of software engineers. However, in order for that insight to reach our kids who are now playing these games, turning it into STEM insight, some translation work is needed.

Future Proof your Business
Thursday Sep 24, 2020
Thursday Sep 24, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews UK futurist Tom Cheesewright, a regular BBC commentator, and author of the new book Future proof your business.
In this conversation, we talked about the role of a futurist in a fast-moving world, the tools needed to predict future trends in your industry, how to build in agility, how the pandemic has changed leaders' thinking preparing for future shocks and what the next decade might bring.
My takeaway is that the future will not be the same for everyone. It all depends. What steps do you take? What skills do you build? What is your organizational agility? What social group do you belong to? Where do you live? What governance structures are you subject to? In terms of growth, Tom Cheesewright talks about the importance of the three C-s, curation, creation and communication, each of which he sees as so complex and multifaceted that you can only ever be an expert on aspects of it in one lifetime, so you may be great on stage but still a poor listener, or poor with digital design tools, for example.

The Future of Commoditized Robotics
Tuesday Sep 22, 2020
Tuesday Sep 22, 2020
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Tom Ryden, Executive Director of MassRobotics, the biggest co-working space and robotics community in the US.
In this conversation, they talk about what's happened over the past decade, where is the robotics field now (from R&D, to standardization, to big company implementation, the role of robots in contemporary factories, and consumer applications). They discuss the changing form factors, the pivotal role of AI and IoT towards a "Cambrian explosion" in robotics. What are the hottest startups? Where are we going in the next decade?
The takeaway is that the future of commoditized robotics just took a major leap forward with COVID-19, as pilots became huge deployments and the automation of manufacturing suddenly became a survival strategy not a future proofing strategy. Next, we might see an uptick in collaborative robots, so-called co-bots.
