Trond's takeaway
Recent disruptions on the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the Covid-19 pandemic, AI, climate change, and misinformation trends have contributed to significant societal changes. Such mega drivers change: the way we interact, work, but also our physical environment. How should leaders respond? Change is a challenge to leaders and the answer begins with identifying how you, yourself are changing as a result.

Trond's takeaway
We will always discuss what is at the heart of education and learning, it is an ever evolving thing that humans care deeply about. How to organize it matters a lot, especially in a resource-constrained environment. The need for scarce talent, particularly in engineering is such that new business models are bound to be explored. Why would parents be the only group investing in educating talent? It might make more sense that governments, lenders, or employers invest, or that students invest in themselves, with collateral in their own IQ or career trajectory. It's an exciting future for young people if these opportunities globalize for every motivated student anywhere.

Trond's takeaway
Tech companies need to reinvent themselves as much as people do. Nothing remains constant. The tricky thing is to combine technological breakthroughs with the kinds of user interfaces that allure consumers and business users. To stay in tune with industry trends is itself challenging, but necessary in order to partner and deliver experiences together, which is the reality of the high tech industry these days.]

Trond's takeaway
Space might be the ultimate frontier, but it is also a space where we, from a humanity governance perspective would want to avoid both no regulation OR overregulation. The stakes are high, despite the vast space available, mistakes could be costly, both immediately and ultimately. Asteroid mining is fascinating, but using telescopes to keep Earth safe makes a lot of sense, too. The use cases of space tech and, eventually space manufacturing, might become many, and it's hard to envision exactly when which of them will come into play. For sure, this is an activity we all have a stake in.

Trond's takeaway
The year 2161 is a long time from now, but not so long that we should relax and not worry about what the world will look like then. What will be different? What will be the same? And, to what degree do we get a choice in the matter? Many questions about about the future, but one thing is certain. New technologies will present both challenges and opportunities, and our biological environment will still constrain us to some degree, but also provide our refuge.

Trond's takeaway
When will fusion come onto the grid? What will the impact be? It seems probable that it will, eventually, solve the energy crisis, perhaps indefinitely, or at least for centuries, it might propel us to Mars and beyond. But way before that, it will allow us to stem climate change, which is no small feat. We just got to get it off the ground. It might not be around within a decade, as many hope, but it shouldn't be 30 years away any more.

Trond's takeaway
The hydrogen economy is coming, it is not even a question of when, it is exactly how we will make it work in the coming decades that is the interesting part. The innovation is not so much in pure R&D as it is in coordinating the introduction of a new fuel source paradigm which would mean building hydrogen-driven planes, but also tweaking airport infrastructure to cater to hydrogen as a fuel source. The key will be to achieve modularity, to increase the efficiency with which cargo and fuel flows through the supply chain. These long-term shifts are not easy to see for politicians and asset owners, but will entail their buy-in.

Tuesday Jun 14, 2022
Tuesday Jun 14, 2022

Make sure you are subscribed to our newsletter on Futurized.org, where you can find hundreds of episodes of conversations that matter to the future. Futurized—conversations that matter.
In this conversation, we talk about how reducing unsustainability still does not create whatever it is we agree should be sustained and how the significant problems must be attacked at the roots, not merely at the level of symptom, by taking up a normative worldview he calls flourishing. We discuss his recent book, The Right Way to Flourish: Reconnecting with the Real World, Routledge, 2019, which deserves a wide audience for its deeply considered vision of a new paradigm beyond the eco-efficiency implicit in how most of us currently understand sustainability. We discuss a number of thought leaders, including philosophers such as Martin Heidegger, and neuroscientist and psychiatrist Ian McGilchrist.
Trond's takeaway
After it gained prominence with the Brundtland report in the late 1980s, Sustainability quickly became defined and operationalized as eco-efficiency without considering the important question of what it is that we want to sustain in the first place. That was convenient both for policy makers and for corporations, and was alluring to consumers, too, but it is ultimately misguided. Instead, we need to embrace a different, more ambitious paradigm which contains within it a normative vision for a better future, not just a form of managed ecological decline.

Energy System Transformation
Tuesday May 31, 2022
Tuesday May 31, 2022
In episode 157 of the Futurized podcast, the topic is Energy System Transformation. Our guest is Carolina Torres, Executive Director of Energy Industry Transformation at Cognite. In this conversation with host Trond Arne Undheim (@trondau), they talk about how software can help transform the energy industry and needed sustainability breakthroughs.
Trond's takeaway
Digitizing heavy asset industries is a key challenge of our time, and it won't be easy. Luckily, there are ways to go about it, and software is key to the transition because it allows the industry to track its progress. We can only hope the analytics is used to speed up the process rather than do the minimum, our ecosystem depends on it. Perhaps we can do more than hoping, though, as we can each put pressure on our employers and governments and local city councils, make investment choices, and practice sustainability.

Tuesday May 24, 2022
Futurized goes beneath the trends to track the underlying forces of disruption in tech, policy, business models, social dynamics and the environment.
I’m your host, Trond Arne Undheim (@trondau), futurist, author, investor, and serial entrepreneur. Join me as I discuss the societal impact of deep tech such as AI, blockchain, IoT, nanotech, quantum, robotics, and synthetic biology, and tackle topics such as entrepreneurship, trends, or the future of work. On the show, I interview smart people with a soul: founders, authors, executives, and other thought leaders, or even the occasional celebrity.
Futurized is a bi-weekly show, preparing YOU to think about how to deal with the next decade's disruption, so you can succeed and thrive no matter what happens.

Trond's takeaway
The pandemic triggered changes in the workplace and now the durability of those changes are being tested. Both managers and employees need to ask themselves how to achieve desired presence and impact in their workplace and working lives. Some of it might be best achieved by being together in person, other needs can be satisfied by simply being together remotely. Work is usually about achieving something together. What that means is changing but there is no reason to think the dust is settled on this issue yet.

Tuesday May 10, 2022
In episode 153 of the Futurized podcast, the topic is: The Rise of Empathy. Our guest is Sophie Wade, author and futurist in discussion with host Trond Arne Undheim (@trondau), futurist and author.
In this conversation, they talk about how the topic got of empathy got on the agenda again, key topics such as burnout, generations, new social contracts at work, hybrid work environment, we discuss empathy habits, team performance, organizational psychology, brain science, and what all of this means for the future of work.
Trond's takeaway
Empathy is one of those topics that rises to the agenda every now and then but probably deserves to always be discussed, given that the future of work is one where we will need to be highly attuned to both humans and machines, and might need to amp up our emotional repertoire and antennae to compete with both.
